His uncle was the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan, the greatest sitar player of his age, adding to the incomparable legacy of his family. Ustad Imrat Khan, Nishat's father and teacher, rose to fame not only as one of the greatest sitar maestros but also as the leading exponent of the bass version of the instrument, the Surbahar, which was invented by his great-grandfather, Ustad Sahebdad Khan.
