Monsoon Melodies

Monsoon Melodies

In India Monsoon is known as the queen of all seasons. It plays a pivotal role in life. And, it has been a source of inspiration for creative minds since times immemorial. It is amazing to see the entire world getting transformed with the descent of the very first showers. From the stiff high-rise buildings to lush green woods to tender blades of grass, everything seems to mellow down, open up and become expressive. Thunder, lightning, soft droplets, heavy downpour, through the rains nature plays the music of life, of creation, of love, of emotion.

Indian classical music has specific Raag-s created for this season. As the name suggests, in Barkha Ritu Aayi all the compositions are creative expressions based on these monsoon Raag-s. The performers are well-established names among the accomplished, sought after vocalists who have huge fan following not just in India but across the globe.

The album opens with the title composition by Sanjeev Abhyankar, one of the senior most disciples of Pandit Jasraj. Depicting the beauty of the monsoon, this romantic composition is set to fast-paced Teentaal. The second composition, Savan Ke Jharane by Sanjeev, is Virah Shringar come alive, away from her lover; the Nayika is restless and sad amidst the thundershowers. This is followed by Sakhi Boond Achanka Laagi by Shruti Sadolikar. One of the most sought after vocalists of her generation, Shruti renders this Pushti Margi composition with grace and beauty. Her rich, unpredictable unfolding of the piece adds to the richness of the composition.

Pandit Ajay Pohankar who as a child prodigy took the world of classical music by storm in the early sixties has enriched the album with his serene Barsan Laage Megh. Describing the arrival of rains, the composition expresses feeling of relief after scorching heat. The build up is gradual and mature and sets the mood for the concluding composition Prem Rang Barasaayo by Ashwini Bhide Deshpande. Beautiful imagery, describing the all-pervading Krishna consciousness, the composition is based on Raag Megh Malhar and set to fast-paced Ektaal. Listening to this composition is like getting drenched in a powerful downpour; a unique combination of force and beauty.

All in all, so many exquisite treatments of the theme of monsoon by the best of vocalists in a single album, makes it a treat for the listeners.
