Born in Calcutta in 1973, he began his training at a young age - his father Pandit Kartick Kumar is one of India's best-known masters of the instrument, a senior disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Kartick Kumar's father, grandfather and great grandfather were also all performers on the instrument in Dacca, now part of Bangladesh.
