The Nightingale of Mithila - Love Songs of Vidyapati & Other Joys…Vidyapati was born near Darbhanga in the first half of the 14th century. Born into a Brahmin family, he wrote works in Sanskrit as well as in the Maithili dialect in which his devotional songs are composed. Most of his songs celebrate the love of Krishna and Radha; and although countless other poets later took up similar themes, Vidyapati's creations have a special sweetness and charm that last to this day. Although his characters are divine, they are also intensely human; and many generations of singers have drawn inspiration from them, creating devotional music that reflects both this world and a world beyond. The Mallik Family: Its musical tradition goes back to the late 18th century, when two brothers, Radhakrishna and Kartaram, arrived at the court of Darbhanga in the North-Eastern part of the country, having studied for over twenty years under Bhupat Khan, a descendant of the famous Mughal court singer Tan Sen. They made a name for themselves by averting a period of famine and severe drought which had lasted for three years by singing the Megh, the magical raga of rain, creating a heavy downpour immediately. As a reward, Maharaja Madhav Singh granted them several villages and the surrounding landed property, where the family resides until the present day. The Malliks are famous for their unique, very rhythmically accentuated style of Dhrupad singing and for their rich repertory of compositions, including ragas that are sung exclusively by their own family. They are also known for their exposition of Khyal, Taranas, Ghazals, Bhajans and songs of the medieval poet Vidyapati in Thumri style. Bidur Mallik is the present senior doyen of the Dhrupad tradition of Darbhanga. Born in 1936, he inherited the musical knowledge and performance techniques of the Mallik Family, without which the annals of classical music would not be complete. His foremost disciples are his three sons Ramkumar, Anandkumar and Premkumar, who in turn are teaching their own children. As the children have already started to perform to much acclaim, three generations of the family are presently active. Although the Mallik Family is one of the few stalwarts of the austere Dhrupad tradition, they perform other styles of classical music with equal ease. Here, they prove their competence in Thumri, Dadra and Bhajan for the first time on a CD.
