He studied Sarangi and Tabla under his father and uncle respectively, before taking up Sitar, inspired by Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan's virtuosity. He trained under the celebrated sitarist and thumri vocalist, Pandit Shrikant Mishra, Guru of the contemporary reigning queen of thumri, Girija Devi. He is accompanied on the Tabla by J. Massey, an exponent of the Banares style of playing.
