At 13, he took up the Sitar under his father, himself a disciple of both Ustad Jamaluddin Khan Binkar and his son, Ustad Abid Hussain Binkar and later became the shagird of Abid Hussain. At the age of 17, he first performed on stage in Bombay and Baroda. Bimal Mukherjee was amongst the most imaginative and intelligent of the few traditionalists who had survived the onslaught of modern musical expressions.
