Their musical association goes back 45 years. In this period of intense creativity, these supremely talented siblings have produced some of the all-time great albums, ranging from Chapters from the Bhagvad Gita, choice verses from Maharashtra’s greatest philosopher-poet Sant Dnyaneshwar, selected ghazals of the legendary Urdu poet Ghalib, and, hand-picked bhajans of Sant Meerabai – considered, to date, as the most outstanding representation and interpretation of this princess-turned-ascetic. As always, the third collaborator has been HMV.
One cannot overlook the rich legacy of path-breaking Marathi songs ranging from freedom fighter Savarkar to avant-garde poets that have enriched the repertoire of modern music. And then, of course, are the many film song hits culminating with the National Award winning ‘Lekin’.
Today, a decade later, this magical team of Lata – Hridaynath, after years of thought and planning, come up with ‘Meera Soor Kabeera’. From the title, one conjures up in one’s mind, devotional songs from the misty medieval past of Indian history. Surprisingly, devotion is expressed through simple ‘geets’, folksy songs, sufiana qawwali, love poems and dance numbers with a '‘kathak'’aroma. Contemporary, communicable and relevant.
