"Asad Ali Khan" Instrumental: RUDRA VINA. Several of the musicians from the Mughal era founded hereditary lineages of performers who transmitted their musical traditions to their descendants throughout the centuries. Ustad Asad Ali Khan is incontestably one of the rare living artists who can assume such a pedigree. According to oral sources, Khansahib's ancestors originated from the lower Rajasthan and migrated to the Deccan sometime in the 15th century. He is the last exponent of an old dhrupad (vocal) style known as 'Khandarbani'. Because of the close and ancestral association of the instrument with dhrupad singing, and like most of the bin players of the past, he was also trained in vocal music. He is in fact an excellent singer with a sweet and melodius voice, although he only uses his gift to demonstrate a particular feature of a raga or to teach his students. Mohan Shyam Sharma accompanies on Pakhawaj.
