"Uday Bhawalkar" DHRUPAD & THE DAGAR TRADITION: Uday Bhawalkar performs in the vocal dhrupad genre, which he studied under Zia Mohiuddin and Zia Fariduddin of the Dagar family. Dhrupad is the older classical music tradition still prevalent in India today, though it has far fewer performers than the modern classical vocal genre, khyal. There are just a handful of dhrupad instrumentalists; one of the best known of our times, rudra vina maestro Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, passed away in 1990 (see Nimbus CDs NI 5276 and NI 5402). Born in 1966 in Jaora, Madhya Pradesh, Uday Bhawalkar is one of the younger generation of professional dhrupad performers in India and abroad. He started learning dhrupad in December 1981, when he received a four-year scholarship to study at the Dhrupad Kendra in Bhopal. He is accompanied by Manik Munde on Pakhawaj.
