Salamat Ali Khan NI 5307

Salamat Ali Khan is the younger brother of the great Nazakat Ali Khan from Pakistan. Here, he is performing with his two sons Sharafat and Shafqat, to whom he has taught the art of vocal music, much in the same way his father, Vilayat Ali Khan, taught him. Born in 1934 in the Punjab, this senior Pakistani singer is one of the top-ranking and most versatile musicians the subcontinent has produced. On this disc, the first piece, Raga Gunkali, is sung by the younger son Shafqat, who makes his recording debut here. The second piece is Raga Saraswati. Salamat Ali leads the singing, with Sharafat in a strong supporting role. In the third item, all three singers participate, each offering their own improvisations in turn, often returning to the composition which they sing in unison. Raga Durga is also named after a powerful Hindu goddess. Ghulab Abbas Khan on Tabla.
