SAROD: While Brij Narayan adheres to the traditional approach of great sarod players, not least that of Ali Akbar Khan, his music has been deeply influenced by his father, the master of Sarangi. The first raga which Brij Narayan has chosen to expound is Lalit, a traditional grand raga which has been recorded earlier in the series by Ram Narayan (NI 5183). Lalit should be performed in the early morning, and expresses feelings of longing. In paintings, it is often depicted as a young maiden anxiously awaiting her lover. ZAKIR HUSSAIN on Tabla.
