SANTOOR: Zakir Hussain on Tabla. Shivkumar Sharma and Zakir Hussain are among India's most acclaimed musicians. Born in 1938, in Jammu, Kashmir, Shivkumar studied with his father, Uma Dutt Sharma, an exponent of the Bengal vocal tradition and noted percussionist. Under his guidance, Shivkumar later began to study Santoor, an instrument used for centuries in Kashmir Valley to accompany folk and religious song and which, under different names and guises, is found in Europe (the Cimbalan), the Middle East, Iran, China and SE Asia. Shivkumar revolutionalised its tuning and playing technique and pioneered its acceptance into the family of Indian classical music instruments. With Zakir Hussain, son of Alla Rakha, he has travelled extensively worldwide to bring this poignant and evocative music to a varied and enthusiastic audience.
